Judging from the number of Borderlands posts I have written previously, you've probably guessed that I'm a big Borderlands fan. Last June, when I heard about the then-upcoming Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, I couldn't be any more excited. Finally, the game was released last Tuesday and it was only earlier today I could finally get my hands on it! So now here's my quick impression of it.
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel features an entirely new host of characters, although the characters are not entirely new to the series. For instance there's Wilhelm, whose special ability comes in the form of a pair of drones that can help him in battle, pretty much like Roland's and Axton's turrets and Gaige's robot friend. I've spent so much time playing as this kind of class so now I'm up for something different, so I picked Athena, whose power is pretty new to the series. She is equipped with a shield and a sword to go along with it.
Aren't those a little bit ancient to wield while fighting cyborgs and aliens in outer space? Yeah, it is ancient, her shield protects you from all frontal assault and hits your enemy and goes back to you like a freaking boomerang. How ancient is that? Look at Star Wars, they have lightsabers there too! Lightsabers are swords, right?
I spent the first about 30 minutes or so with Jack in the Hyperion satellite which he is in charge to take care of. As soon as I recovered from the crash, some CLAPTRAP (no not the CLAPTRAP) started going crazy telling me his boss needs my help because the satellite is under attack. This boss, as it turns out, is Handsome Jack! Okay, no surprise there.
So you actually have a face, that really looks like your face! |
When it comes to the story, my first thought is that the Pre-Sequel mainly revolves around the journey of Handsome Jack from a sensible-but-laid-back guy to the sarcastic villain he is in Borderlands 2. When I first met him, he was beaten up by a gang of Dahl soldiers who attacked the Hyperion satellite. He is completely helpless like an insignificant NPC but from the very start you can see that Jack has a great sense of humour...which later mutates into that severe sarcasm he has in Borderlands 2.
After I helped him out, Jack told me we need to get off the satellite, and so we began running around the satellite doing things, opening doors, flipping switches and stuff. Although that may sound a little bit boring, I can feel the rush. The satellite does have a sense of being attacked. Jack is capable of defending himself though, he has this gun-laser-thing strapped on to his arms. The intro scene in the Hyperion is exciting, I must admit, compared to those of the previous games'. As Mordecai puts it, "Our story began with us getting off a bus. This sounds all explosive and stuff."
Bandits! Working together! Systematically! With hooks and ziplines! |
I like the intro too. Just like the game before, the first thing that pops out during the intro video is, of course, a skag and a bunch of bandits WORKING TOGETHER to hijack the space shuttle that the player characters are onboard of as it launches to Pandora's moon. Fight soon ensues in the space ship but as always, shit happens and instead of the Pandora's moon, the space ship crashes on the Hyperion satellite instead, which, as mentioned beforehand, turned out to be invaded by a bunch of crazy Dahl military.
Fast forward later and there I was, on the moon of the planet Pandora. And if you're wondering, yes, aside from the new host of characters, the Pre-Sequel also features new environment (which is obviously the Moon) and some new interesting mechanics, which I'll explain later. With new environment come new enemies. But the most important of all is that there are new guns!
Stay tune!
