Yesterday, after spending a few hours playing Supreme Commander 2 to blow off some steam, a curious question popped into my head. How many nukes does it take to destroy a fully upgraded ACU? I know it sounds ridiculous but I couldn't help it. I could have easily looked for this information online but I decided to discover it myself since this would be more fun and amusing.
So the main objectives would be:
A) Build a nuke silo
B) Maximum-upgrade the ACU
C) Nuke the ACU
I think all the ACUs have the same health points when they're fully upgraded, regardless of which faction they belong to. So, I picked the Cybran (the evil-stereotype) for this experiment because they're suitable for rapid expansion and also because I like them. The first thing I needed to do was to build a lot of research stations so that I can get as many research points as quickly as possible.
ACU: Let me help you build things that will destroy me. |
But research stations are expensive, so I'm going to need to accumulate a lot of masses first to afford them. Then again, masses are harder to harvest, so I won't depend on mass extractors as my primary source of mass. Instead, I'm going to build energy stations -- a lot of energy stations. Energy stations are much cheaper and they can be build anywhere in the game. Most importantly, energies can be converted into mass, but you're going to need to unlock the Mass Extract ability before you can do that.
My first step was to trying to keep a balance in building Energy Cores and Research Stations. So, I built two Research Stations and five Energy Cores. Once I have unlocked the Mass Conversion ability, I started to convert the energies I had accumulated into masses in seconds. I built more energy cores so that I could afford more Research Stations, which I needed to fully upgrade my ACU. Besides that, I needed to unlock the Nuclear Silo as well, which I was going to use to destroy my ACU.
As soon as I was able to convert energy to mass, my rate of progress drastically increased. So it is important to unlock the Mass Conversion ability as soon as possible. Unlike the other factions that need to build an additional type of structure called the Mass Converters, the faction that I played as right now does not need to. The mass can be converted right away by the energy cores. This advantage enables the faction to expand quickly.
Maximum upgrade has been reached. |
After nearly half an hour, I'd finally done enough to fully upgrade my ACU. Hooray! So now's the fun part, it's time to blow it up! I've built three nuclear silos for this purpose. I relocated the ACU further away from my base, and now it's ready for the test. Launch!
The poor thing finally succumbed to the power of the nukes. |
Apparently, it took about three nuclear strikes to bring the ACU down to the ground... Now, it's lying lifeless and I feel kind of bad blowing my own ACU up, well, a little. Anyway, there are still a lot of nukes left, so I'll just spend the rest of them to blow up my own base.
Yup. That's about it. I know this post seems kind of dumb. Yes, it took three nukes to destroy an ACU and I could just be straightforward about that. Although I think it would have been cooler if it was a video post instead. You should've seen the explosions. But hey at least you know more about how the resource system works in Supreme Commander 2.
TL;DR: It takes 3 nukes to destroy a fully-upgraded ACU. Yay.
