Well I haven't been posting any review for a while. I'm a bit busy with university and in the process of learning French as well, which will be my 5th language and after that Portuguese with the help of my Brazilian friend, Eric. Having been occupied for quite a while keeps me away from the desk to write some good ol' fashioned reviews. But mostly my habit of writing long and elaborated review is pretty much the cause of that, so this semester break I'll make sure to find time to sit down and finish those long overdue reviews. So here's a warm-up: a brief review on Counter Strike Xtreme V6, a fan-made mod for the ever-popular multiplayer classic shooter, Counter Strike.
Just like many other mods, Xtreme adds tons of new stuff to the game. There are several new zombie modes a'la Left 4 Dead as well but I can't seem to get any of them to work, so we're left with the normal mod, which is good enough for me. The normal mode retains the usual gameplay of the original Counter Strike. What's new are the addition of user-created character skins complete with voice-overs and most importantly: new weapons! Tons of new weapons and quite a number of them are not just aestheticly modded but they come with new mechanics as well.

Glorious. |
My favorite would be the minigun, which makes me feel almost invincible with its power. But for power, there is a price. The minigun's weight slows down your movement and it takes time to start blasting, which fortunately can be countered by the RMB that keeps the barrel rotating and ready to fire upon command. The downside is that it makes so much noise, it's very easy for others to detect you. So make sure you bring your teammates along to protect you while you act a their tank, because trust me, once this beast starts raining down bullets, nobody is safe.
As aforementioned, there are several new character skins in addition to the good old ones, including those of whom I assume are female anime characters who don't seem to dress to go out for a killing spree, save for a couple of well-dressed female commandos (thank God). Unfortunately, there are only a few new maps. They are not at all great by the way, and you'd rather play on the vanilla maps. Plus, you can't buy weapons on the added maps, rather, the weapons are left on the ground for you to pick up and the modded weapons are not present; only the original ones are.

The addition of the killing spree notification keeps the game more engaging. |
So it's safe to say that the mod's main strength are the weapons... well unless you can get the zombie modes to work, that is (but I'd just go and play Killing Floor instead). The new weapons look awesome and some are just plain weird. Aside from the minigun, my other favorite is the "guitar gun" that really strums like a guitar when firing shots. The mod isn't that large in size anyway so if you're intrigued to try it out, you can download it here for free.
