I don't play DotA. Apparently where I'm from, everybody plays this game. I think most people around the world play DotA, haha, who am I kidding. I have nothing against it. Just because you don't play a game doesn't mean you have to hate it (hello, CoD and Battlefield fanboys). But I really don't know what's so fun about it. Then again, I guess you can't judge a book by its cover. What you're about to read are my initial thoughts on DotA, I say again: initial thoughts, which I wrote about a year or so ago. My thoughts on this game has since largely unchanged, except now I know a little bit more on how it works, but that's just about it. DotA fans, don't be upset. Behold!
Every gamer has a game that they're good at and a game that they're bad at. One may be an expert with the trigger in FPS but when it comes to RTS, he or she only knows the basic of building structures or commanding units. As for me, I'm good with most games I ever played so far. I'm not that pro of a player, but there is no game in particular I really, truly suck at, but one: DotA.
In fact I exceptionally suck at this Warcraft 3 mod that I only played it a few times before losing all of my interest in it. Call me a quitter, but I was never really interested in this game in the first place. But when I got to matriculation college, I found out how popular this game was. I'm the kind of person who's quite immune to following other people's trend. But after a few persuasion here and there, a small interest came into shape, so I decided to give it a shot. And just like I said, I suck at it.
Not Playing DotA Apparently Makes Me Seem Weird
As of 2014, I understand that Dota is about attacking the opponent's base. I am very outdated and behind. |
I semi-jokingly told him the reason I never played DotA was because everyone was playing it, which meant by the time I arrived at the scene, they were all a step or two ahead of me. So, there was no chance I could enjoy playing it, let alone winning any match, because I was just going to be a punching bag. You see, what I was trying to say is that I always thought that every DotA players were veteran players. So, any newcomer may not have any chance to shine, unless they play among themselves.
New Players Are Punching Bags
So, when I first played it with this kind of awareness in my head, I was already at a disadvantage which eventually discouraged me to spend more time playing after a few devastating losing streaks. I didn't consider that as embarassing though, because I didn't know what was there to be embarassed about losing that game. You see, I was clueless as well, not knowing what I was supposed to do, not knowing which were friends or foes.
But this is not a big deal for me, but it is to most DotA players- to discover somebody who's not interested in their favorite game. This is the only thing that is understandable. If I know of a friend who never played Borderlands or Bioshock before, I'd beg him to do so, because not playing these awesome games is pretty much a big deal. So, fair enough.
Clueless of the Redundancy
Back to DotA, the only reason I gave it a shot is that everyone kept pestering me to try it, so I did. But I actually had little to no interest at all. Like I said, I didn't even know what the hell was I supposed to do. Everyone that I asked told me, "You just defeat opponents and level up!"
Even at this point, I don't even know the purpose of the game. In fact I don't even know if it has any clear purpose at all. Initially I thought it was an RPG. But every time I see my friends play, all I see are a bunch of characters killing each other, getting killed, respawning and leveling up. That was when I got really baffled. So I asked around and most people I asked so far said that the purpose of the game is to gain XP, level up and buy powerful items to kill your enemies with.
That's it? That's so redundant. I think it's no more exciting than watching the animation of your character chopping woods all day in Skyrim. What's the point of leveling up now if you have to start over from a level 1 character the next time you play the game? Can somebody please explain to me in detail instead of looking at me as if I'm from outer space whenever I asked about it?
Correct Me If I'm Wrong
Dota 2! Wider resolution! |
You're probably saying, "If you wanna know what the game is all about, why not do a quick research on Wikipedia or something, you lazy bum bum?" Well, perhaps I'm just not interested. Don't get me the wrong way. This is not a hate article like the ones Call of Duty players would write about Battlefield, or vice versa, perhaps... (I don't know, I'm not really into flame wars). I'm just confused. What is it that is so interesting and exciting about DotA? I guess I need somebody to tell me because I'm too lazy to find it out myself.
DotA 2 release date is around the corner and everyone's pretty excited about it. Some guys suggested that I should give it a chance. Nope, no thanks. Not taking anything away from DotA though, I have nothing against it. I may not understand why people enjoy it so much, but I can relate to that enthusiasm that they have. It's great for sure, but DotA and I, we're just not meant to be.
