So... I just heard about a new Borderlands game called the Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! Being a big fan of the Borderlands series, this got me really excited. I've been following the series since the beginning. So far, Gearbox has yet to disappoint us; nevermind the DLCs; the main games are getting better and better than the previous. This new entry that is Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is more than welcomed.
But I was quite surprised when it turned out that this game is another installment to the series - not a DLC or expansion pack but an entirely new installment. I honestly didn't expect another main game to come out this soon. Besides, even if it did then I've always expected it to be a sequel called Borderlands 3. More surprisingly, this third installment, Borderlands The Pre-Sequel, is not a sequel to Borderlands 2. It's a pre-sequel, which means it takes place between the first and second game. Anyway, as a big Borderlands fan, it is my duty to take a closer look into the game to see the new things that will hopefully let me tick a few boxes on my last year's wish list.
Misunderstood villain? |
One of the many interesting things about Borderlands: The Presequel is that Handsome Jack is the good guy here! While to me, Jack isn't such an effective antagonist since we never really have much face-to-face interaction with him in Borderlands 2, I have to admit that he makes up to that with top-notch voice acting. But now we get to see Jack face-to-face, because here he's our boss! That's right, in Borderlands the Pre-Sequel, you work for Jack. Since this game takes place before the events of the second game, we'll get to see Jack as the good guy he was before he turned into that evil dictactor in Borderlands 2. The table has also been turned, we may end up liking the baddies and hating our own player-characters!
And yes, of course there would be new characters. Well, the playable characters in Borderlands Pre-Sequel isn't actually new to the series though, at least for the ones who have been revealed so far. But what's interesting is that these characters are the villains we used to fight in Borderlands 1 and 2 and now we get to play as these baddies. Surely you remember Athena from the General Knoxx DLC of the first game? She is one of the playable characters in Borderlands The Pre-Sequel.
Athena is Borderlands 1 and Athena in Pre-Sequel. |
Then there's also Wilhelm, the Hyperion engineer who killed Helena Pierce under Jack's orders. Before the events of Borderlands 2, Wilhelm isn't as augmented as we seen when we fought him to snatch the power core. The next playable character is Nisha the sheriff of Lynchwood who is also Jack's girlfriend. The final playable character (as revealed so far) is... Claptrap! For some reason, this seemingly-incapable-of-defending-himself is a gunslinger here!
Also, there will be new weapons, of course, and I am beyond excited to find out to the point I'd rather not talk about it here. Anyway, another interesting thing I found out is the ability to stomp people! Heck, the only first-person shooter that I ever played that allows you to use some other ways to kill baddies other than shooting them in the face is Bulletstorm. And since Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel takes place in the Hyperion moon base, new gameplay mechanics will be present, such as low-gravity and jetpacks! Word has it that Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel will be released this October, so let us all wait and see!
