Microtransactions: Why I Wasn't Excited About Diablo 3

One of the most awaited games right now is Diablo III. Ask anyone to list out their top 5 most anticipated relese of 2012, Diablo III is going to be somewhere in that list. Last January, I too, was excited when I heard about the hype surrounding this follow-up to Diablo 2. But as I dug in, my excitement vaporated, only to be replaced by disappointment, and eventually, ignorance.

I like dungeon-crawlers RPGs. Torchlight, FATE are some of the most enjoyable I've ever played. But these two titles were much simpler than the big bosses of dungeon-crawlers. Diablo III is one of the big bosses, if not the biggest, in the business. So, I thought, why not try it out? But I am not a fan of long-term financial commitment when it comes to gaming. And exactly a huge chunk of Diablo III articles I read explains its horrifying core element: microtransaction. But what's so bad about that anyway? Nothing to fuss about, no big deal, right? Yes, it is to me.

Sure, buying in-game items with real cash means that you can also sell for real cash as well, but come on, I'm a simple gamer. I just wanna play video games. I hate complicated processes that involve accounts and bank transaction. Otherwise I'd have a fictional version of myself in EVE Online right now. You could accuse me of thinking this way because I'm just a student, have no job other than studying all day long and thus, unable to afford a 30-dollar monthly subscription. Yes, that's true, that's why I dont play MMORPGs. But even if I had a job and received a monthly paycheck, I'd still stand for this: I don't wanna routinely pay for a game that I already bought.

diablo 3, microstransactions, exploitation

So, when I first about microtransactions in Diablo III, I was ready to forget about playing it. Then, when I heard that it will utilize DRM and can only be playable online, I already acted like it was never a game that I would like to get my hands on. Well, screw that, there are lots of awesome games out there waiting in queue for me to try.
