What we know so far - Biomutant

I can't remember when or where I first heard of Biomutant. I just remember it instantly making its way into my top 5 most anticipated games of 2018/2019. What is Biomutant? The description on its Steam page sums it up the best: "it's an (upcoming) open-world, post-apocalyptic Kung-Fu fable RPG, with a unique martial arts styled combat system allowing you to mix melee, shooting and mutant ability action". It's Kung Fu Panda, but your hero is a raccoon and he's far more agile, and kung fu isn't the only thing he's good at. Seriously, it's really cool.

The game takes place is a vibrant and ambitious setting. If the gameplay trailer and screenshot indicate anything, it's that setting is absolutely gorgeous. The lush green forest and the bright blue sky and the post-apocalyptic backdrop, all remind me a lot of the setting of Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, which is an excellent game itself. Who says the post-apocalyptic world has to have dusty wastelands and polluted skies?

Given its open world setting, exploration is a big part of the game. Apparently there are three individual worlds to explore: the sunny, green forest world, an underworld of some sort and a miniature solar system... whatever that means. Fortunately, "a huge open world" is not the game's main selling point, so I really hope that it means that the world of Biomutant is as interesting as it is beautiful, instead of simply miles and miles of emptiness.

Mutations and augmentations will further enhance your raccoon. These enhancements will predictably change your character's appearance as well. Crafting is also another big part of the game, it's an open-world RPG so that's kind of expected.

Biomutant's combat system is a hybrid between hack-n-slash, close-contact martial arts and shooting. Your character the raccoon is agile and swift, akin to hero characters in hack-and-slash games like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta. There's dodging and rolling involved but it's not Dark Souls, that's for sure. Your raccoon can perform combos as he juggles enemies mid-air with his sword, and he shoots and flying-kicks them at the same time. It's totally chaotic.

Your main character is a raccoon, obviously. While the raccoon's gender and fur colour are purely aesthetic, but the changes you make on its physical appearance affect the raccoon's damage and health stats. There's also a voice narrator who, well, narrates your actions, at least at the very beginning. That's pretty cool, reminds me a lot of when I first heard Bastion's narrator and thinking, "Wow, this has never been done before!".

The game is adorable without looking cartoonish. While Biomutant has realistic graphics, as contrary to the cartoonish approach of games like Fortnite, its characters are very goofy. Your hero (or anti-hero, depending on your choice) character is a raccoon wielding an oversized longsword. In the gameplay trailer, he fights equally goofy but adorable enemies, including yellow rabbits and mini bosses that look like giant teddy bears. It looks as if the actors in a popular kids show are fighting on the filming set without taking their costumes off.

The raccoon takes a piss to "mark their territory". Could be to mark a checkpoint, or a fast-travel point, who knows. All I know is one thing:

That's just great!
