Hey guys. Oh, hello there first time viewers! Oh hello to random passers as well. So as you've noticed, this month we're not having any Indie Game of the Month entry to make way for a Halloween-related post. The post title says it all, so to cut the story short, here goes.
Slender: The Eight Pages
These suggestions are not listed in any particular order, but I'm gonna start with Slender the Eight Pages first since this indie title is the simplest game on this list, as I figured nobody really wanna spend much of their time indoor this Halloween. I suppose almost everybody heard about this game and played it at some point.
But you may not know that the character Slender Man actually originated from an internet meme created by a forum user of the comedy website Something Awful, which he submitted to a contest held on the website. The character then went viral before being adapted into a video game. In fact, even the video game adaptation itself has its own spin-offs, and the good thing is, they are all FREE!
Unfortunately due to technical errors, I couldn't put the download link of the original game here, so I guess you should look for it yourself. It's easy, just Google "slender eight pages" and the download sites will show up on the first page. Trust me, pumpkin.
Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth
Apparently, you have some time to spare, browsing through this blog here, so I guess now it's about time for me to suggest more horror games for you. This horror action-adventure came out about, eh, 7 years ago, but that shouldn't be a problem, right? Outdated as it may seem, it's still an awesome game! Inspired by the works of the famous H.P. Lovecraft, Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth is a mix between realistic first person shooter and stealth. The story follows the investigation of a mentally unstable detective (not completely retarded) upon the case of a missing person in the mysterious town of Innsmouth.
Unlike traditional first person shooters, the game is stripped entirely from HUDs, meaning that there are no health and ammo indicators displayed on screen, as well as aiming reticule. Ammo is limited, and specific injuries can occur and affect the player in certain ways. Haven't had enough realism in real-life? Then try it. If you're a fan of H.P. Lovecraft's works, then you have another good reason to give it a shot.
Penumbra: Overture
Penumbra: Overture is the first game of the Penumbra trilogy. Technically, it's a first-person shooter, but also contains the elements of survival horror, puzzle and adventure. If you think Call of Cthulu was already challenging enough for its realism and lack of heads-up-display and , then you obviously haven't played Penumbra yet.
Aside from not featuring firearms, Penumbra: Overture uses advanced AI intelligence that respond realistically to sound and light, meaning the game requires some stealth skills for you to evade enemies. The game also emphasizes on physics-based puzzles, which the developers Frictional Games are famous for.
The story is pretty classic. You play as Philip, a physicist whose mother recently passed away. A mysterious email and a series of clues then lead him to a mysterious location in uninhabited northern Greenland, and that's where the fun part -I mean, the "horror" part- begins. Shouldn't bring the Halloween mood down, should we?
Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
Yup. You've seen this one coming. Since the first game of the series, Amnesia: the Dark Descent came out, the landscape of the horror genre changed drastically. Gamers no longer define games such as Left 4 Dead as true survival horrors. Nobody looks down at indie developers anymore. A lot of Amnesia-clones start tailing the game since its release. Now, the sequel, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs is here. I won't say or spoil anything on this one though. After all, Halloween is supposed to be about scary surprises, right? So get a copy of the game yourself and shit in your pants away!
Oh and by the way, three of the games are indie-developed, so looks like we've got ourselves three Indie Games of the Month this October. Happy Horror Gaming!
